SET Support: Special Education Teacher
- In Scoil Chaoimhín Naofa our SET team consists of 2 fulltime teachers and a shared teacher from a neighbouring school. This year we are paired with Scoil Na Coróine Mhuire, Ashford.
- Our Special Education Team provide extra teaching support for children who may need help in areas such as literacy, numeracy, language, social skills or emotional development.
- We provide support through one-to-one and small group teaching, depending on each child’s needs, as well as in class support and team teaching throughout the year.
Early Intervention is Key
- The earlier we can identify and support a child’s learning needs, the better the outcome.
- Support is flexible – some children may need just a short burst of help, others may benefit from longer-term support.
- We may contact you to talk about your child’s progress or possible supports.
- Please don’t feel worried if this happens – it’s part of helping every child reach their potential.
- Openness and good communication between school and home make a big difference.
Assessments
Sometimes we recommend assessments to better understand a child’s needs.
- Assessments are tools, not labels. They help us to plan the best support.
- While waiting for an assessment, the school will continue to provide in-school support to the best of our ability in the meantime.
- There is often a backlog for formal assessments, so waiting times can be long.

Helping at Home
English & Literacy
Read together every day. Even ten minutes makes a significant difference. Visit your local library and let children choose their own books.
Mathematics
Counting, measuring and telling the time at home reinforce classroom learning. Number games and cooking together are excellent for maths skills.
Religious Education
We use the Grow in Love programme. Parent resources are available at growinlove.ie.
SESE: Science & Geography
Our surroundings in Glendalough are a wonderful natural classroom. Walks, birdwatching and noticing seasonal changes all support SESE learning.
