Starting a new school is a big step. Talk positively about school, practise simple routines such as putting on a coat and opening a lunchbox, and encourage your child to ask an adult for help when needed. Short, calm goodbyes and consistent routines can make the first weeks easier.
One of the lovely traditions in our school is our buddy system, where each Junior Infant is paired with a pupil from 6th Class.
Having an older buddy helps our youngest pupils feel safe, supported and connected as they begin their school journey. During the first few weeks especially, the 6th Class pupils help to look out for their buddies during outdoor play times, helping them to navigate the playground, make friends and settle into school life.
The buddy relationship continues throughout the year in many different ways. The children take part in buddy reading sessions, where the older pupils read with and encourage their younger partners. They also work together on seasonal arts and crafts activities, celebrate special events throughout the year and enjoy visits to the woods and outdoor learning experiences together.
Choose a lunchbox and drink bottle your child can open independently. Clearly label coats, jumpers, bags, bottles and lunchboxes. Avoid sending valuable personal items unless requested by the class teacher.
The school will provide families with any class-specific booklist or supply information before the start of the school year. Contact the school office if you are unsure what is required.
Please share relevant learning, medical or support information with the school as early as possible so appropriate arrangements can be discussed. The school values close cooperation with families and outside professionals where required.
Parents and guardians should use Aladdin Connect to notify the school when a child will be absent and provide the requested reason. Contact the school office if you cannot access your account.
The school office can help with enrolment documents, Aladdin access and practical questions. For matters concerning classroom learning or your child’s wellbeing, the office can advise on the appropriate way to contact the class teacher.
