1798 Rebellion in Rang 5 & Rang 6
Ireland in the 1700’s
In History Fifth and Sixth class learnt all about the American Revolution and the French Revolution. We looked at their causes and the effects they had on the rest of the world.
After this we looked at the effects of the French Revolution on Ireland, and the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland.
Our class then did projects on this Irish Revolution.
Here are some of the topics we covered:
Help from France
Wolf Tone
The Society of the United Irishmen
British ambush
The four main areas
The rising in Wexford
Boolavogue
The King in Wexford
We put a lot of hard work into these projects and presented them to the class.
Here is a peak at some of our work:
National Children's Choir
This year, 4th 5th and 6th class took part in the National Children’s Choir. After weeks of practice we travelled to Ravenswell School in Bray to sing in a concert with 3 other schools from Greystones and Bray.
Our conductor was Anne Purcell. Muinteoir Siobhán taught us all of the songs that we needed to learn. Thank you so much Múinteoir! We had great fun doing this and made lots of new friends. Here are some photos of the children while we were practising and performing our concert.
The National Concert Hall
Seven of the students from our school were chosen to represent Scoil Chaoimhín Naofa in the National Concert Hall. These students were: Aine Duffy, Katelynn Byrne, Rhys Byrne, Lily Finn, Katie Lynch, Harry Conroy and Ella Cranley. They had a practice on Thursday the 23rd of May and their concert is on Sunday the 26th of May. We were so proud of them performing in the National Concert Hall.
Mad About Magnets
Science - Magnetic Fields
In April we learned about magnetism during our science lesson.
Magnetism is an invisible force that can make some things move towards each other. Here are some facts that we learned about magnets!
Rocks were the first magnets.
Every magnet has a space in which it exerts its force.
This area or space is called the magnetic field.
The size of the field depends on the size and strength of the magnet.
Magnets have two poles.
One side is called the North Pole and the other is called the South Pole.
Same poles repel/push each other away.
Opposite poles attract/pull towards each other.
We conducted an experiment with magnets and iron filings to show the magnetic field around mangets. Check out our results!
We really enjoyed learning about magnets and we found out that they’re very interesting and cool.
Sponsored Spink!
4th, 5th & 6th Class Sponsored Spink
Our Sponsored Walk was held on the Friday 12th April before our Easter Holidays. 4th , 5th, and 6th class walked up the Spink in Glendalough. It took us approx 3 hours. Luckily, the weather was nice despite being a little foggy and cold at the very top. We were tired after our walk but the Easter eggs we got at the end made it all worth while!
Revolution in 5th & 6th Class!
The French Revolution
5th and 6th Class studied all about the French Revolution in History. Then we created projects about the French Revolution.
The topics we covered were:
Napoleon Bonaparte
The French Flag
The Enlightenment
The Execution of King Louis XVI
The National Assembly
The Causes of Revolution
The Storming of The Bastille
Everyone was put into groups and we carried out extensive research on our topics. There was a lot of hard work put into these projects and it was very enjoyable to listen to when the students presented them to the class.
Here are some pictures of us doing our presentations.
Super Selfies!
Super Selfies!
5th and 6th class created self-portraits in Art. First, we divided the page into four separate areas. This made it easier to draw because it made lining up the eyes much easier. It also made lining up the nose and the mouth easier. This was our second attempt at our self- portraits. This second attempt was a lot better than our first attempt. We really enjoyed drawing these self-portraits. Take a look and see if you can recognise us!
Green Fingers in Scoil Chaoimhín Naofa
With the help of the whole school and the parents association, after Múinteoir Áine, Múinteoir Brian and Múinteoir Anna turned the soil and weeded the bed. The Vegetable Garden was planted. We planted, scallions, garlic, onions, chives, lemon balm, lumper potatoes, British Queens, different kinds of lettuce, radish, peas and beans.
As long as the weather cooperates, we should have lovely salad plants ready for harvest come the summer holidays. Well done to each and every class who are out weeding and watering once a week!
Dance - Day for The Irish Cancer Society
On Friday the 3rd of May, we had an afternoon of dancing coordinated by Lucy in R4. We danced the afternoon away to Sucker for You by the Jonas Brothers and the smiles on the faces of R3-R6 were anything to go by EVERYONE had a great time raising money for the chosen charity. Even Múinteoir Laura, Sharon and Anna joined in!!
Michelin Star Quality
This Thursday and Friday Rang 3 were making wedges as part of our Incredible Edibles journey. Nearly everyone tried our two flavours; just salt or paprika and chilli. Here’s the recipe and some pictures of our preparation.
Wash your hands and get everything ready. You will need, knife, teaspoon, vegetable oil, about 4 medium sized rooster potatoes, paprika, chilli powder, roasting dish and salt. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees (fan)
Cut the potatoes in half and then slice into thick chips (with skin on)
Add one tsp of oil into roasting tin and sprinkle with salt. Place wedges into the roasting tin. (If using spices sprinkle 1tsp of chilli powder and paprika to taste at thi time)
Place in oven and cook for 20 - 30 minuets.
Take out of oven, let cool and ENJOY!
Paper Mache Madness
Before the Easter Break, Rang 1 and Rang 2 created fabulous paper mache chickens and rabbits! We had to roll up your sleeves, work hard and be prepared to get very messy!
What we needed:
1 balloon
Newspaper
Paper mache paste (a mix of wallpaper paste, PVA glue and water)
Paint
Decorations (feathers, googly eyes, shredded paper etc.
How to Make a Paper Mache Creature
1. First we added layers of gluey paper to a blown up balloon, leaving a little hole for a mouth. We tried to apply at least three layers, but we figured out the more the merrier to make it really strong. We worked especially hard at this stage. Múinteoir Sharon’s Fifth and Sixth class were very kind and helped us out too.
2. Once the paper mache was dry, we popped the balloons. You don;t need to be alarmed if it implodes, because you can just push them back into shape.
3. Next, we painted the balloon white. This is to ensure that the next layer of paint has a good base.
4. Then we added coloured paint and really made our balloons come alive.
5. To finish things off, we added shredded paper inside and added feathers and googly eyes.
We think they turned out brilliantly. You can check them out for yourself.
Sponsored Walk in First & Second Class
The whole school went on a Sponsored Walk in Glendalough before the Easter break.
First, Second and Third Class had a great walk around Glendalough. We walked along the green road, had a look at the waterfall, had lunch by the lake and spotted lots of lambs and tadpoles along the way.
We felt very lucky to have our walk in such a beautiful location.
We had great fun hunting for Easter eggs in the bushes at the end.
Thanks to all the adults who walked with us. It was a great day!
Incredible Edibles!
This year R3 are taking part in a competition called Incredible Edibles. This competition promotes healthy eating and growing your own.
For the first two tasks the children were required to research food origin and the process of getting foods such as chives, potatoes and wheat (bread), from farm to fork.
This week we completed task three, along with the rest of the school we went out to plant in our school garden, we planted lettuce, radish, scallions, potatoes, garlic, peas and some beans.
In the picture we’ve included here, the class are planting the vegetables we are growing for the project.
